In the beginning

A Dev blog. Not something I thought I would ever do, but here we are.

This blog is designed to capture my progress into the world of game design. I don’t plan on this being read by anyone but myself, but hope I can look back on this in years to come and see how much I have grown, if anything at all.

So what is this for and why am I doing it exactly ? Well as mentioned above, I want to capture my progress. For many years I have been interested in game design, heck I even have a degree in it, but I have never really pursued it. Crazy right? A degree in game design and yet I don’t actually have a career in it ? It’s not as crazy as you might think. These days many people end up in different careers compared to what they obtained a degree in. After leaving university, I never felt it was something I truly wanted to do and a large part of that was where the industry was heading. It seemed like the world of video games became only about money (shocking right?) I didn’t want to be in an industry where creative freedom seemed to be disappearing in favour of the same video games being churned out year after year. With that, the whole notion of being a game developer got put on the back burner. Now, all these years later (8 to be exact) I have decided to delve back into it. The industry has changed again and independent game development has become massive, allowing game designers to once again release their own creativity and actually make a living from it. Also, what else am I going to do during lockdown? Side note, the world is currently facing a pandemic and falling apart.

Anyway, back to the blog. I have been doing some online courses to bring my knowledge back up and want to create a simple 2D pixel RPG game as my first project. Why? Because it seems like the easiest option. 2D will mean I can create some basic sprites for my game and since I am not very good at drawing, I thought it would be the easiest choice. 2D will make it easier on things like programming and the RPG aspect of it, means I can cover many areas of programming with the various game mechanics that come with an RPG game. I don’t intend to do anything super unique or set out to make a game that I will sell and make millions from. Can you imagine if I created my first game and it sold millions ? Mental. This game is nothing more then me stepping back into the game world and trying to finish a project from start to finish. This blog is intended for me to keep track of my thoughts and will hopefully urge me to keep going, despite the lack of anyone interested in reading this. I will try to document everything I do as I go, and hopefully have a nice little development blog by the end of it. Who knows, one day I might be rich and famous and this very blog will end up on the TV ! Just incase it does, clears throat Look mum! I’m on TV! So, without further ado, blog on!
